THE "DT" Devil's Tower Trucker
When relatives would come to visit we would load into our family Volvo and hit the highway (my sister hugging an empty Folger's 1lb tin can as receptacle for her car sickness).
Windows down, hair blowing and everyone peering across the fast moving countryside, we played a game that never grew old - a contest to be the first to find a hint of Devil's Tower in the distance - all 867' of it. Visiting Devil's Tower is always like the first time seeing it as there is something truly incredible about this majestic monument and with each visit comes a sensation that is hard to put into words.
Its grandeur and beauty dwarf onlookers standing below, peering up to find tiny climbers desperately hugging the craggy rock. Beautifully colored peace flags quietly pepper the trees and brush and bring a mysterious sense of calm and serenity. We were proud to take our children last summer for the first time and to watch their eyes light up standing below it, in awe.
Another first for the state, Devils Tower National Monument was established in 1906 by Teddy Roosevelt as our nation’s first national monument because of its scientific and geological importance and over the years has been the bearer of many names....... Bear's Tipi, Grizzly Bear's Lodge, Bear Lodge Butte, Tree Rock, Brown Buffalo Horn and finally.......Devil's Tower.
If its not on your bucket list, it should be - especially since the mashed potato version on your dinner place doesn't count. Until then, you can wear our hat with pride as a reminder of what it looked like when you've visited or to get here and see it first hand.
